Lesson 2: Matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
What are the three states of matter?
- Solids
- Liquids
- Gases
All matter is composed of…
Tiny particles called atoms
Solids have…
definite: Mass, volume, shape
Particles of a solid:
- Tightly packed together
- Vibrate against one another
- Do NOT move from place to place
Liquids have…
Definite: Mass, volume
NO definite shape
Particles of a liquid:
- Close together
- Vibrate past one another
- Little movement
Gases have…
NO definite: mass, volume, shape
Particles of a gas:
- Not close together, very spread out
- Vibrate freely past one another
Phase Changes:
- Matter can change from one state to another through physical processes
- Heating or cooling causes these changes
- Examples: melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation
Define: Melting
Melting refers to the process in which a solid substance changes into its liquid state when heated
Define: Freezing
Freezing is the opposite of melting. It’s the process in which a liquid substance changes into its solid state when cooled
Define: Evaporation
Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas when it gets hot but not boiling
Define: Condensation
Condensation is when a gas turns back into a liquid when it cools down
What happens when a solid melts?
It turns into a liquid
