Lesson 3 Flashcards
What are the main interview tips for Contact Tracing?
- Build Trust: Be polite, non-judgemental, and help address their concerns
Be confident - Show that you are knowledgeable and prepared
Invite questions - Throughout the interview, invite the respondent to ask questions. This will help establish a conversational flow and show you care about their perspective
Listen more than you speak
Use open-ended questions
Communicate in a way that the respondent understands - Avoid technical terms, jargon, or confusing sentences
Stick to the facts - Provide clear information and correct and misconceptions about COVID-19. It’s better to say “I don’t know, but I can get that information for you,” than to make up an answer.
Encourage positive behaviors - Validate the respondent if they describe actions or express a plan to act in a way that will protect themselves and others from the spread of COVID-19. Show that you’re grateful for the information they provide.
What is risk communication?
Providing and exchanging up-to-date information and advice to people facing a threat to their health. The purpose is to enable people at risk of getting COVID-19 to make informed decisions to protect themselves and their families.
What is culture?
The learned and shared behavior of a community of people who interact with one another
Cultural Sensitivity vs Cultural Humility
Sensitivity - Recognizing that cultural differences between people exist, and that these differences don’t mean one group is better or worse than another.
Humility - Consider our own cultural beliefs, gain a better understanding of the cultures of others, avoid statements and behaviors that suggest your own culture or experiences are better than others
How can culture affect contact tracing?
- Affects the way people describe or communicate their symptoms
- How they understand causes of illness, infection and transmission
- Why the take action, or don’t take action, when they’re sick
- How they interact with healthcare professionals
- Privacy about identifying their contacts
- How they feel interacting with a person from another gender
Stigma in relation to contact tracing
Diseases can make anyone sick, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Unfortunately, some people might unfairly blame or avoid individuals from a particular culture (create stigma) because of fear about COVID-19
Questions you can ask to learn about someone’s culture
- How do you prefer to be addressed?
How are important healthcare decisions made in your family?
Are there certain healthcare procedures and tests that your culture does not allow?
If I send you follow-up information, which language are you most comfortable reading in?
