Lesson 3 Flashcards
What are 3 types of passive transport
Diffusion, osmosis, facilitated transport
What is active transport?
A mechanism of transport that requires energy stored in ATP
What does active transport need
Protein pumps, and for endocytosis mechanism are called phagocytosis and pinocytosis
What is diffusion
Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What does passive transport mean
Mechanism of movement that does NOT require energy
What are two types of passive transport
Diffusion, and Osmosis.
What is osmosis
Movement if water across a membrane. In osmosis water moves from an area of high water concentration to low water concentration.
What is solute
Particles which are dissolved in water
What is a solvent
liquid which dissolves the solute.
What is solution
Combination of solute and solvent.
Isotonic solution
Same solute concentration as another solution. No net movement of water particles. Concentration on both sides of cell membrane remain constant
Hypertonic solution
A solution that has a higher solute concentration than another solution. Water particles will move out of the cell causing crenation.
What is hypotonic.
Solution that has lower solute concentration than another solution. Water particles will move into the cell, causing cell to swell up and eventually lyse.
