Culture
Represents a person’s way of perceiving, evaluating, and behaving within his or her world, and it provides the blueprint for determining his or her values, beliefs, and practices.
Four basic characteristics of culture.
Learned from birth through the process of language acquisition and socialization. Shared by members of the same cultural group. adapted to specific conditions related to environmental and technical factors and to the availability of natural resources. Dynamic
Cultural Competence
Respecting and understanding the values and beliefs of a certain cultural group so that one can function effectively in caring for members of that cultural group.
Culturally competent community health nursing requirements
Nurse understands lifestyle, value system, health and illness behaviors of diverse individuals, families, groups, and communities
Socioeconomic status
Composite of the economic status of a family; or unrelated individuals based on income, wealth, occupation, education attainment, power.
Poverty
Children are most affected. Can lead to developmental delays, toxic stress, chronic illness, nutritional deficits, more likely to experience poverty into adulthood.

Disability
Umbrella term covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.
Developmental disabilities
Conditions that are manifested by limitation before 18 years of age.
Impairment
A problem in body function or structure– activity limitation or participation restriction
Handicap
A disadvantage resulting from an impairment or disability that prevents fulfillment of an expected role
