The synthesis of nursing practice and public health practice. goal is to preserve the health of community and surrounding populations by focusing on health promotion and health Maintenace of individuals, families, and group within the community. Thus, community/public health nursing is associated with health and the identification of populations at risk rather than with an episodic response to patient demand.
Community oriented
specialty is focused on the care of the individual. family and the community (ex-public health nursing)
Community based
Within the community. Provides acute/chronic care to individuals or families in the community.
Level 3 tertiary
Correction and prevention of deterioration of a disease state (teaching insulin administration at home)
Level 2 secondary
early detection and intervention (screenings for STIs)
community health
extends realm of public health to include organized health efforts at the community level through both government and private efforts.
public health
art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and prompting health through organized community efforts to benefits each citizen. Mission is social justice, which entitles all people to basic necessities such as adequate income and health protection and accepts collective burdens to make it possible. Connotes organized, legislated, and tax-supported efforts that serve all people through health departments or related governmental agencies.

What is the definition of health
A state of complete well-being, physical, mentally and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. health is influenced by more than just biological factors. public health nurses empower individuals and communities to live healthier lives.
Present stage
Infectious disease prevalent among low-income populations, and some ethnic minority groups in the west. Common risk factors contribute to chronic health conditions such as changes in diet, environment alterations, and occupational hazards. Rise in population and greater population density increase mental and behavioral disorders.
Endemic
Diseases that are always present in a population (ex-colds and pneumonia)
Epidemic
Diseases that are not always present in a population but flare up on occasion (ex-diphtheria and measles).
Pandemic
The existence of a disease in a large proportion of the population– a global epidemic (ex-HIV, AIDS, and annual outbreaks of influenza A)
Upstream approach
focused on prevention and health promotion
Downstream approach
focuses on treating or managing illness after it has occurred.
Primary = prevention
