“THE SELF IS NOT PRESENT AT
BIRTH, RATHER, IT DEVELOPS
WHILE GROWING THROUGH
SOCIAL EXPERIENCES”
GEORGE MEAD
THE SELF AS A PRODUCT OF
SOCIAL INTERACTIONThe
•The self is not present at birth. It develops only
with social experience wherein language,
gestures, and objects are used to
communicate meaningfully.
■ The sociological perspective of the self is
based on the assumption that human behavior
is influenced by group life.
■ A particular view of oneself is formed through
interactions with other people, groups, or
social institutions.
■ American Sociologist
■ Founder of Symbolic Interactionism
Theory.
■ He introduces the looking-glass self.
■ He believed that it is through these
interactions that one begins to develop
an idea of who they are; therefore, the
self is a product of our social interactions
CHARLES HORTON COOLEY

people’s sense of self develops
through social interactions, and
argued that people develop a
sense of self by interpreting the
reactions of others to them.
