Lesson 3 Flashcards
What are some of the truths Jesus revealed to the Samaritan woman at the well?
God is a Spirit, true worship must be in spirit and in truth, if you knew the gift of God you would ask, he is the Messiah
Briefly recount the history of the Samaritans and indicate the reason for the Jews’ disdain of the people.
-After the divide, Northern Kingdom is conquered by the Assyrians (721 BC)
-Capital of Samaria become depopulated expect for the poor and undesirable
-People from other nations were brought in and intermarried with these remaining people, resulting in the Samaritan race
-Samaritans were both a mixed race, and mixed their worship of God with worship of idols
Note in this scriptural account how the Lord is deft at drawing a person out to recognize their spiritual need. How might we learn from the Lord Jesus and His attitude from the Samaritans.
We should make people feel wanted (not unclean), while still dealing with the problem of sin; remember that harvest always begins right where you are
From John 5:16, shed some light on the viciousness of religion.
-Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him for healing a lame man on the Sabbath
-Shows they cared more about tradition than the needs of people, and that they cared about tradition so much they were willing to kill over it
Using John’s Gospel, recount scripture that validates the deity of the Lord Jesus.
-John 5:17-18: Jesus referred to God as his Father, thus making him equal with (ie. the same as) his father
-John 5:21-22: Jesus claims power of life and judgment, the right to the worship of men, and the power to give eternal life to those who hear and believe
Explain why the religious Jews for the most part rejected Jesus and His claims (John 5:40)
Did not want Him, didn’t have the love of God in them, would’ve been willing to accept a false Messiah who came in his own name
List some reasons why Jesus prayed.
to make right decisions, have spiritual authority to minister, keep the flesh under subjection, resist temptation, defeat Satan
What was Jesus’ primary purpose for ministry?
To lead people to salvation
What kind of training did the Lord give his disciples? Why is this significant?
daily “on-the-job-training”; shows he was close to his disciples
List three “religious duties” from Matthew chapter 6.
1.) Alms giving
2.) Prayer
3.) Fasting
