Lesson 2C: Models of Communication Flashcards
These are conceptual representations used to explain the communication process. Each offer a different perspective of the communication process.
Models of Communication
Three General Types of Communication Models
LINEAR
INTERACTIVE
TRANSACTIONAL
This consists of a Sender who encodes the message being transmitted through a channel and is decoded by the receiver.
Linear
One-way activity; The
receiver is passive.
Linear
Feedback is not part of
the process.
Linear
This model of
communication applies to
mass communication.
Linear
Noise could be
environmental/semantic
(meaning in language or
logic)
Linear
This model consists of a sender who encodes a message that is transmitted through a channel which is then decoded by the receiver who will encode their feedback then the initial sender would decode it becoming the receiver.
Interactive
Two-way activity; Sender
and receiver share the
same role.
Interactive
Feedback is present in
the process
Interactive
This model is focused on
exchange. Sender and
receiver take turns talking
and listening.
Interactive
Noise could affect the
interpretation of the
message
Interactive
Examples of Interactive Model
Video conference, phone call, classroom setting
This model consists of participants with messages that are co-creation of meaning—Contexts
Transactional
Communication is a
simultaneous activity.
