Lesson 29: Characteristics of Stars Flashcards
This is a ball of hot gases that emits light throughout the universe.
Star
What type of star is the sun?
G type
What are the seven types of stars?
O, B, A, F, G, K, and M
One of the most useful tools in determining the characteristics of stars.
Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (H-R Diagram)
It was developed by two astronomers- Ejnar Hertzsprung and Henry Norris Russell.
H-R Diagram
A Danish astronomer plotted the absolute magnitude of stars against their temperature.
Hertzsprung
An American astronomer who used spectral colors against the absolute magnitude.
Russell
These are the two characteristics that define the brightness of a star.
Luminosity and Magnitude
This is the total energy that a star produces in one second.
Luminosity
This is the star’s perceived brightness as seen on Earth.
Apparent Magnitude
This is the system astronomers use to measure a star’s temperature.
Kelvin Scale
These are very dense stars.
White Dwarfs
These are made from the fusion of hydrogen atoms to form helium atoms in their cores.
Main Sequence Stars
Former dwarfs that have cooled and expanded to a great size.
Giant Stars
These start their life as main sequence dwarfs.
Supergiant Stars
