Lesson 26.1 - The Muscular System Flashcards
This system helps the body move from one position to another. It enables movement, keep the body posture, and produces heat.
The Muscular System
The Muscular System has three types of muscle.
skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
There are more than _______ skeletal muscles in the body.
600
They are sually found attached to the bone. Their main function is to contract in order to move bones.
Skeletal Muscle
These are known as voluntary or striated muscles. They are innervated by the nervous system.
Skeletal Muscle
Skeletal Muscles are known as
Voluntary or striated muscle
These allow the contraction of muscles resulting in motion and these are the motor units of the skeletal muscle.
Sarcomeres
Repeating units make up a muscle fiber.
Sarcomeres
Sarcomeres are composed of
Actin and Myosin
Skeletal Muscles has the following structures
Z-line
M-line
H-band
I-band
A-band
where actin is connected to
Z-line
the attachment point to the thick filaments.
M-line
where myosin heads are not present.
H-band
thin filaments that do not overlap with thick filaments.
I-bands
the thick and thin filaments including the myosin heads.
A-band
This is the arrangement of the different components in the sarcomere. This shows the collective action of the different components in order to induce muscular contraction.
The Sliding Filament Model
____________ is triggered when ATP hydrolysis occurs.
Contraction
Myosin head extends in order to attach to the binding sites found on actin.
Cross bridge cycling
It binds to troponin which moves tropomyosin. The binding site becomes exposed.
The role of calcium ions
produce movement through contractions.
Agonist
assist the agonist in producing the movement.
Synergist
muscles whose actions oppose that of the agonist.
Antagonist
____________ are muscles that decrease the angle of a body part, ___________ increase the angle.
Flexors, extensors
______________ increase the height of a body part, ____________ are muscles that decrease height.
Levators, depressors
______________ are muscles that brings a body part toward the body, ___________ bring muscles away from it.
Adductors, abductors
_____________ allow twisting of the body part.
Rotators
