Lesson 2.5 Flashcards
Fluid mosaic model:
integral, peripheral, and time
Lipids:
phospholipids
cholesterol
sphingolipids
Chemical components:
lipids
proteins
carbohydrates
Proteins:
integral vs. peripheral: do work required of membrane
carbohydrates:
glycoproteins
glycolipids
membranes control
movement
Passive diffusion:
- water, gases, small lipophilic organic
- large molecules and charged compounds do not cross
- does not require proteins - Osmosis
Mediated transport:
by carrier proteins and requires proteins
Passive mediated transport:
facilitated diffusion and no energy required, uses gradient
Carriers:
carriers/transportation: protein that makes it happen
Protein channels:
passageway
Active mediated transport:
requires energy ATP and proteins
Pumps:
movement of charged species against the gradient
Ex. sodium-potassium ATPAse pump
cell to cell communication:
glycolipids + glycoproteins provide “touch points” between neighboring cells -> stops replicate cation in normal cells
