Lesson 20 Flashcards
Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs)
a departure procedure for pilot/controller use to provide obstacle clearance and a transition from the terminal area to the appropriate en route structure
Standard Terminal Arrival (STAR)
an arrival procedure published for pilot/controller use to provide a transition from the en route structure into the terminal area
When are SIDs and STARs published?
every 56 days
Instrument Departure Procedures (DPs)
a preplanned instrument flight rule (IFR) departure procedure published for pilot use, in graphic or textual format, that provides obstruction clearance from the terminal area to the appropriate en route structure
Name the 2 types of DPs:
Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs) and Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs)
Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs)
a preplanned IFR departure procedure printed for pilot use in textual or graphic form to provide obstruction clearance via the least onerous route from the terminal area to the appropriate en route structure
Name and Describe the 2 Basic Types of SIDs:
- Pilot Navigational: allow pilots to provide their own navigation with minimal radio communications
- Vector: requires ATC to provide radar vectors from just after takeoff until reaching the assigned route or a fix depicted on the SID chart
Name the 3 sections of a SID chart:
- margin information
- planview
- textual description
ATC must have_____ with the aircraft to be able to provide vectors for a Vector SID.
radar contact
T/F: The pilot is required to have at least a textual description of the SID at the time of departure.
True
T/F: The pilot is required to have at least a textual description of the SID at the time of departure.
True
In ref to SIDs, A pilot is expected to advise ATC: (3 things)
- if they cannot comply with a SID
- if they do not possess SID charts
- if they simply do not wish to fly a SID
When a pilot indicates they will not accept a SID, clear the aircraft via the filed route to the extent possible, or via a ___________.
Preferential Departure Route (PDR) —- a specific departure route from an airport or terminal area to an en route point where there is no further need for flow control
When searching for a particular SID, first look for:
City
_____ are designed to expedite ATC arrival procedures and to facilitate transition between en route and instrument approach operations.
