lesson 2 the nervous system Flashcards
why do different parts of our body need some way of communicating with each other
so we can
-coordinate our behaviour
-respond to our surroundings
which 2 different organ systems do we rely on to
-coordinate our behaviour
-respond to our surroundings
the nervous system
the endocrine system
neurones are adapted to do what
carry electrical impulses from one point to another
neurones are what
long
thin
lots of branch connections on either end
for one nerve cell to communicate with another, what do we need
a synpase
the central nervous system (CNS) is made up of what
brain and spinal cord
what do sensory neurones do
they carry information from receptors all over our body to the CNS
what information could the sensory neurones carry (eg)
changes in temperature
C02 in bloodstream
the CNS sends information back to the body via what
motor neurones
motor neurones are generally what
muscles or glands
hormones do what
release hormones
glands do what
contract
in a reflex arc, what are the benefits of having them reflexes
they are rapid and automatic
a stimuli is detected by what
receptor cells
as a receptor cell receives that stimulus what happens
it stimulates a sensory neurone that will carry an impulse from your finger to your spinal cord
inside the spinal cord (CNS) it will transfer the impulse where
to relay neurone
the relay neurone will pass the impulse where
to motor neurone
the motor neurone passes the impulse where
to the effector
(eg your bicep where the muscle contracts and move your hand)
between each of the neurones what is occuring
the synapses, which converts the electrical signal temporarily to the chemical signal so it can be passed betwee (diffuse) between the different nerve cells
