Add drops of iodine to solid or liquid placed in a spotting tile
Starch positive result
Yellow/brown to blue/black

Method for sugar
Crush food with water in a pestle and mortar
Add extract to a boiling tube
Add 2cm3 of Benedict’s reagent
Place in a hot water bath for 2-3 minutes
Sugar colour change
Blue - green - brick red

Biuret test
Protein method
Crush food with water in a pestle and mortar
Add to a boiling tube
Add 1cm3 of sodium hydroxide and copper sulfate
Shake gently

Emulsion test
Fat method
Crush food with ethanol in pestle and mortar
Add extract to a boiling tube
Half full a second boiling tube with cold water
Pore extra t into boiling tube containing cold water
Fat colour change
White emulsion will form at top of boiling tube Half full- containing cold water
