Lesson 1 - How we get the energy we need Flashcards
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
How can carbon dioxide levels be detected?
- Limewater, which turns from colourless to milky white in the presence of carbon dioxide.
- Hydrogen carbonate indicator, which turns from red/orange to yellow in the presence of carbon dioxide and from red/orange to purple when carbon dioxide is removed.
What are the 3 systems involved in respiration
Circulatory
Respiratory
Digestive
What is the function of the digestive system?
The digestive system changes large insoluble food molecules into small soluble molecules that are able to be absorbed into the blood stream.
What does the circulatory system do?
The circulatory system carries small soluble food molecules and oxygen to every cell in our body and takes away unwanted waste e.g. carbon dioxide, via the blood.
What is the role of the respiratory system?
The respiratory system takes oxygen into our bodies via the lungs and removes carbon dioxide. The oxygen is then absorbed into the blood, travels to the heart, and is pumped around the rest of the body.
Why do we need energy?
Cells use the energy for all their reactions and processes.
What are some uses of energy in cells?
Movement - muscle contraction, making new chemicals, growth and repair, moving substances, nervous impulses, temperature regulation.
Do plants need energy?
Yes, plants are living things and need energy just as much as animals do.
What is one example of how plants use energy?
Plants take minerals in through their roots.
What is the importance of temperature regulation?
It helps keep our body at 37°C.
