Lesson 2 Cellular Resperation Flashcards
What is fermentation?
Energy releasing process that does not require oxygen
What is cellular respiration?
The process by which cells obtain energy from glucose
What happens during cellular respiration?
Cells break down glucose and other molecules from food in the presence of oxygen, letting out energy
What happens after animals eat a meal?
Bodies break down the food an releases the sugars that come from it
What is the most common sugar?
Glucose
What does does the word “respiration” mean?
Breathing
What happens when cells need energy?
They withdraw the energy by breaking down glucose thru cellular respiration
What is the benefit of breathing?
It removes waste products of cellular respiration from your body
Where does the first stage of cellular respiration occur?
In the cytoplasm of the cell
What happens in the first stage of cellular respiration (a,b,c)?
a. Molecules of glucose are broken into smaller ones
b. Small amount of energy is released
c. Oxygen is not involved
Where does the second stage of cellular respiration occur?
In the mitochondrion
What happens during the second stage of cellular respiration (a,b,c)?
a. Glucose molecules made even smaller
b. Requires a lot of oxygen
c. Releases a lot of energy that the cell could use
What is the cellular respiration equation?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
What are the raw materials from cellular respiration?
Glucose & oxygen
What are the products of cellular respiration?
Carbon dioxide, water, and energy
How do animals get glucose?
From food eaten (plants & organisms)
Where is oxygen needed for cellular respiration located?
In the air & water
What do you notice about the cellular respiration equation?
Its the photosynthesis equation backwards!
Photosynthesis & cellular respiration can be thought of…
Opposite processes
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration form a cycle that…
Keep the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide fairly constant with the earth’s atmosphere
What happens to energy released thru cellular respiration?
The energy is used or lost as heat
What is alcoholic fermentation (a,b)?
a. Occurs in yeast and in other unicellular organisms
b. makes alcohol, carbon dioxide, small amount of energy
What happens during exercise (a,b,c)?
a. Makes muscles lack oxygen
b. Cells use up oxygen faster than it could replace it
c. Fermentation occurs w/ lactic acid
What is the effect of lactic acid fermentation?
soreness in the muscles
How does pain go away with lactic acid build up?
When cells get more oxygen, lactic acid breaks down
