Lesson 1 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is an autotroph?
An organism that can make its own food
What is photosynthesis?
The process of a cell capturing energy to make food
What is a heterotroph?
An organism that CANNOT make its own food
What is chlorophyll?
The pigment for photosynthesis in chloroplasts
A. How do ALL living things obtain energy from the sun?
Directly or indirectly heterotroph/autotroph
How to heterotrophs get their food?
Either by absorbing or consuming
What is another word for heterotroph?
Consumer
B. How do living things get energy from the sun?
By obtaining/capturing energy from the sun
Where does the process of photosynthesis mostly occur?
In the leaves
What happens during photosynthesis?
organisms absorb energy from the sun and use the energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars and oxygen
What happens in stage two of photosynthesis?
Cells produce sugars. Cells use carbon dioxide from the air, hydrogen and oxygen make sugar due to chem. reactions, Oxygen exits the plant.
What happens in the first stage of photosynthesis?
Energy from the sun is captured and water in the chloroplast is split into hydrogen and oxygen. Oxygen is given off as a waste product.
What is glucose?
A type of carbohydrate made is the process of photosynthesis
Where does all the oxygen on this earth originate?
Thru plants and the process of photosynthesis
How do plants feed themselves?
They use some of the sugars they have produced from photosynthesis
