Lesson 2: BASIC CONCEPT OF HAZARD Flashcards
are naturally occurring
phenomena or processes.
Natural Hazards
are hazards that are
outcomes of the interaction of natural
phenomena and man-made activities.
Example: smog or desertification
Quasi-natural Hazards
are hazards that have
early signs or indicators before its occurrence.
Slow onset hazards
are those
that result from human activitiesand actions.
Man-made/Human-
induced/Anthropogenic Hazards
Hazards like earthquakes, floods, tropical cyclones,
industrial accidents, and pandemics can result in
significant loss of life and injuries. The destruction of
buildings, infrastructure, and transportation systems
exacerbates the physical toll on affected populations.
Death and Injuries (Casualties)
are
hazards that occur or strike without any prior
signs or warnings.
Rapid or sudden onset hazards
Survivors of disasters often experience severe
psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD). The loss of loved ones, homes, and a
sense of security can lead to chronic anxiety and
depression.
Psychological Trauma
Natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and hurricanes often lead to the destruction
of homes, schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges. This
damage disrupts daily life and can lead to long-term
displacement of communities.

Infrastructures
