Q

what effect does global warming have on the oceans

A

reduces CO2 solubility, so oceans can take in less carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

Q

what is carbon capture

A

a method used to catch up to 90% of CO2 emissions produced in usage of fossil fuels or natural processes
-CO2 rich gas is extracted, processed and compressed, transported and injected underground via pipes
-Icelands “Orca” carbon capture plant

Q

what is post combustion

A

CO2 is separated from the chimney gas by bubbling the gas through an absorber column which contains liquid solvents which remove CO2

Q

what is Oxyfuel

A

burning fossil fuels in normal air produces many gases, whereas just burning them in an atmosphere of pure oxygen produces only CO2 and water vapour, easy to seperate

Q

what is pre combustion?

A

coal is gassified to produce a synthetic gas, which is reacted with water to produce CO2 and Hydrogen, Co2 is captured, and Hydrogen is diverted and burned for energy

Q

how can changing land use mitigate climate change

A

conversion from arable agriculture (crops) to pastoral (animals) decreases ploughing
(+explanation of ploughing effect)

-using land to produce renewable energy, reduces fossil fuel usage, and is infintite

-farming with perennials (persists for several years), soil cover reduces erosion, and photosynthesis

Q

how can improved transport mitigate climate change

A

-petrol and diesel cars production stopped by 2030 in the UK
-containerisation
-new trains and public transport (elizabeth line), Bullet train in Japan releases around 1/12 of the carbon of a flight from Tokyo to Osaka
-ultra low emission zones charge petrol and diesel cars in London
