Moral Panic Definition
Members of public demonstrate worry and panic
Due to media displaying certain type of people as threat
Interactionist theory of deviance
Deviance is social construct
-whereby mainstream society control what behaviours are defined as deviant
What is labelling theory
Powerful groups share societal reaction by making rules for powerless groups
Labelling (Matza)
Argues most people have deviant values
WC youths more likely to be negatively labelled than mid class youths for same behaviour
What is master status
Once deviant status is labelled deviant status becomes master status
Status overrides any other part of identity and deviant is now who they are
What is self fulfilling prophecy
If somebody believed to act certain way
Perception affects their actions
Does what is expected
What is primary deviance

Deviant act is committed but not publicly labelled yet
What is secondary deviance

Deviant act repeated and more visible
Attracts societal reaction

Group of people represented negatively in media
Behaviour seen as threat to social order

Fail to explain original deviant act and why occurred in first place
Also does not explain why youth commit certain deviant acts over others
Criticised for being deterministic
