Lesson 11.1 - Xylem Flashcards
1
Q
Xylem functions:
A
- Transport water and mineral ions
- Support
2
Q
Make up:
A
Made up of several types of cell, most of which are dead
3
Q
Structure:
A
Long, hollow structures. Made by several columns of cells fusing together end to end.
4
Q
What packs around Xylem vessels?
A
Xylem parenchyma
5
Q
Xylem parenchyma:
A
Thick-walled. Contains tannin deposits.
6
Q
Tannin:
A
Bitter, astringent-tasting chemical that protects plant tissues from herbivore attacks.
7
Q
What provide extra mechanical strength but do not transport water?
A
Xylem fibres
8
Q
Xylem fibres:
A
Long cells with lignified secondary walls.
9
Q
Lignin on xylem walls:
A
- Can form rings, spirals and relatively solid tubes
10
Q
Bordering pits:
A
Lots of small undignified areas called bordering pits.
This is where water leaves the xylem and moves into other cells in the plant.
