Lesson 11 - Selective Breeding Flashcards
What is natural selection?
Natural selection is basically animals evolving to their surroundings.
What is bioaccumulation?
If one plant is toxic, then the primary consumer will be double the amount, and the secondary consumer will be even more etc.
What are the advantages of using fertilisers?
- organic ones don’t do much harm
- plants are less likely to be malnourished
- help plants grow
- save time
What are the disadvantages of using fertilisers?
- artificial fertilisers could get washed away into water (eutrophication)
- could potentially damage the soil
Etc.
What is selective breeding?
Selective breeding involves selcting specific organisms with good characteristics to breed together, with the hopes that the offspring will have those characteristics.
True or false - organisms are bred selectively based on their characteristics?
True
True or false - selective breeding can be done with organisms from different species?
False - it must be with the same species.
Name some organisms (plants and animals) that have been selectively bred.
- cabbage
- kale
- broccoli
- brussel sprouts
- cauliflower
- sugarcane
- cats
- camels
- dogs
- rabbits
- fruits
Etc…
What do genes control?
Genes control the production of proteins.
What does genetic engineering allow to happen between organisms?
It allows scientists to transfer genes between organisms.
