Lesson 1 - Plants, Food And Leaves Flashcards
What does MRS GREN mean?
M = Movement
R = Reproduction
S = Sensitivity
G = Growth
R = Respiration
E = Excretion
N = Nutrition
Name some uses plants have in our daily lives.
Give out oxygen.
Take in carbon dioxide.
Play a huge part in our diet.
Help with ecosystem.
Can help with clothes.
Why are plants so important?
Help keep planet cool.
Help prevent soil erosion.
Huge part in diet.
Home to animals.
Give us oxygen and help us breathe.
What does the word ‘excretion’ mean in MRS GREN?
It means to get rid of waste that the plant has.
Do plants take in food from the air or soil?
They don’t take food from anywhere. They make food themselves.
What process do plants do to make their food?
Photosynthesis.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
They make food for the plant cell using photosynthesis.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Water + co2 —> (light on top of arrow) glucose + oxygen
Why does photosynthesis not happen at night?
The plants need sunlight to photosynthesise.
What is the pigment called in chloroplasts?
Chlorophyll
What does the pigment in chloroplasts do?
The pigment in chloroplasts (chlorophyll) absorbs light energy from the sun, and this energy is used in photosynthesis.
What do the network of veins in a leaf do?
They transport water, sugar and minerals.
What does the stomata do?
It is there for gas exchange.
What does spongy layer do in a leaf?
The spongy layer contains air spaces to allow carbon dioxide to diffuse through the leaf.
What do the long palisade cells help with? Hint: Related to light. Palisade cells are packed with chloroplasts.
They maximise light absorption for photosynthesis.
