Lesson 10 - Insects And Seed Germination Flashcards

1
Q

How does toxic build-up work?

A

If there is 1000kg worth of plants that are rotten or carry harmful diseases for example, then 100 rabbits would eat it. And that would lead to 10 foxes eating them. As this process goes on, the foxes at the end would have the most toxins in them.

Q

How do bees pollinate plants?

A

Bees pollinate plants by transferring pollen on their bodies from the stamen of one flower to the carpel of another. Pollen moves down the pollen tube and diffuses with the ovule, which develops into a seed. Once fertilisation occurs and a seed develops, the ovary develops into a fruit - and it eventually becomes a new plant.

Q

How do bees use nectar to make honey?

A

Bees use a speecial tube to suck up the nectar. Then the nectar mixes with enzymes in the bee’s “honey” stomach which starts the process of turning it into honey.
