lesson 11 Flashcards
1
Q
Nucleic acids are assembled from nucleotides
A
DNA is a nucleic acid compsoed of nucleotides
nucleotides consist of
1. 5 carbon sugar (deoxyribose)
2. nitrogenous base (ATCG)
3. phospage group (PO4) attached to 5’ carbon of sugar
2
Q
phosphodiester bonds links nucleotides
A
formed between phospahte group of 1 nucleotide and the 3’ -OH of another nucleotide
3
Q
DNA replication requires
A
- something to copy: parental DNA molecule (template)
- something to do the copying: enymes (DNA polymerase)
- building blocks to make new copy: nucleoside triphpshates
4
Q
DNA replication occurs in 3 stages
A
- initiation: process of replication starts
- elongation: new DNA strands are synthesized
- termination: the process of replication ends
5
Q
replication is semi discontinuous
A
strands are antiparallel
DNA polymerase can only synthesize in 5’ to 3’ direction
