Lesson 10 - Quantitative Data Flashcards
How can researchers summarise data?
- Working out the measures of central tendency (average)
- Working out the measures of dispersion of spread of scores around the central tendency
What is the most useful measure for central tendency and why?
The mean because it takes all scores into account
What are the other measures of central tendency?
- Mode
- Median
What is the most useful measure of dispersion?
Standard deviation
What are the other measures of dispersion?
Range; although it is effected by extreme scores
Why is putting data into graphs useful?
It is easier to observe general trends on a graph
What graphs are most commonly used?
- Histogram
- Bar chart
- Scattergram / scatter graph
What is a histogram used for?
Used when scores can be ordered from low to high
What is a bar chart used for?
Used when scores form categories
What is a scattergram used for?
Correlational studies
What are tables used for?
To summarise data
