Ophthalmologist
A medical doctor is able to prescribe medications, examine and treat eye problems and to perform eye surgery
Optometrist
A doctor able to prescribe medications, examine and treat eye problems, perform minor surgical procedures, fit and prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and prescribe visual therapy and low-vision aids
Optician
Fits and fills optical prescriptions, working closely with the optometrists and ophthalmologists
Paraoptometric
Someone who’s certified to perform front or back office optical assisting skills
National Optician Certification Examination (NOCE)
Covers optics, lens designs and materials, frames styling and frame materials, frame adjusting, prism, and different ocular problems
Contact Lens Registry Exam (CLRE)
Covers how to measure the cornea, select the proper contact lens, assess the contact lens fit, and detect contact lens problems
Number of years that the NOCE-CLRE certification is good for before renewal is required
