Lesson 1: Using Earth's Resources Flashcards
Finish the sentence…
Humans use the Earth’s resources to provide….
4 main things!!
1.) Warmth
2.) Shelter
3.) Food
4.) Transport
What do natural resources (increased in amount by agriculture) provide what four main things?
1.) Food
2.) Timber (from trees)
3.) Clothing (from cotton.)
4.) Fuels (ie. biofuels.)
Why are finite resources (ie. fossil fuels) from the earth, oceans and atmosphere processed and used?
- They provide ENERGY and MATERIALS.
What is sustainable development?
- Development that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
What processes does chemistry aim to improve to provide good amount of products in a sustainable way?
2 processes
1.) Agricultural processes
2.) Industrial processes
Give 2 examples of a natural products that are produced by agriculture/ farming.
- Cotton/ produced from plants.
- Planting trees: can be used for timber/ fuel.
Give an example of a natural resource that has been replaced by a synethtic alternative.
- Rubber.
- Naturally: from sap of tree.
- Synthetic (most of rubber in the world is synethic): produced using crude oil.
What 3 places can finite resources come from?
1.) Atmosphere
2.) Ocean
3.) Earth (ie. on land.)
