Lesson 1: Cell Theory And Organelles Flashcards
Cell theories
•cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
•cell is the smallest unit of life
•study of cell is cytology
[Second part theories]:•all organism are composed of one or more cell
•cell is the basic unit of life in all living things
•all cells are produced by the division of pre-existing cells
What are the modern cell theories?
•cell contains hereditary information(DNA)
•all cells are basically the same in chemical composition and metabolic activities
•all basic and physiological functions are carried out inside the cells
•cell activity depends on the activities of sub cellular structures
Two types of cells
Prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
Contains a nucleus and prokaryotic do not
Eukaryotic cells
Are single celled organisms while eukaryotes can be either single or multi-celled
Prokaryotes
Cells for the forms form of life on earth they are simpler and smaller than eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells
Have specialized organelles in the cytoplasm a membrane-bound nucleus enclosing genetic material organized into chromosomes there cell division occurs by mitosis and meiosis e.g plants animals fungi protozoa and algae
Eukaryotic cell
This cells are larger than a typical prokaryote and can be as much as thousand times greater in volume
Eukaryotic cells
What is the cell wall of prokaryotic cell?
Peptidoglycan
the cell wall of eukaryotic is called?
Cellulose
Founder of microscope they experimented with two lenses placed in a tube and invented the compound microscope
Hans&Zacharias janssen
Discovered the cell through his observation on a slice of cork under the compound microscope the cork was made up of many tiny units room like structure which then he named cell
Robert hooke
Used a handmade microscope to observe pond scum and discovered single-celled organisms he called them animalcules he also observed look cells from fish, birds, frogs, dogs, and humans.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek(1673)
Became first to observe living cells
Anthon van Leeuwenhoek
(Development of cell theory)Stated that cells are the building blocks of all plants and that an embryonic plant arose from one single cell or concluded that all plants are made of cells
Matthias Jakob schleiden
(Development of cell theory) Discovered and stated that cells are the fundamental units of animals or stated that all animal tissues are composed of cells
Theodor schwann
Concluded that cells must arise from pre-existing cells
Rudolf virchow
Organelles without membrane are? They are present both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
•cell wall
•ribosomes
•cytoskeleton
