Social Psychology?
Looks at the relationships between people and how people affect each other’s behaviour (social influence)
What is conformity?
• Form of social influence
where a person changes behaviour/attitudes/beliefs to be in line with the majority due to pressure of the majority. (can be really pressure or imagined)
List three types of conformity
Compliance
Internalisation
Identification
Define Compliance
When individuals adjust their behaviour & views & attitudes &beliefs they voice in public so that they are in line with the majority. They do not change privately held views/attitudes/beliefs and conformity only lasts when group is present.
Superficial & Temporary form of conformity
Define internalisation
Individuals adjust their behaviour/views/attitudes/beliefs they voice in public so they in line with majority. Individual examines their views/beliefs/attitudes based on what what the others are saying leading to the person accepting the groups point of view privately as well as publicly.
Deeper & more permanent form of conformity
Define Identification
Individual accepts social influence because they went to be associated with another person or group.
