Term

Definition
Statement that gives the meaning of the term.
Ambiguous
Words have more than one possible meaning.
Lexical definition
A definition that shows relationships or reduces ambiguity by providing a single, established meaning of a term.
Vague
A word whose extent is unclear.
Precising definition
Seeks to make more precise what was previously vague or fuzzy.
Stimulative definition
When a new word is invented or an existing word is applied in a new way.
Theoretical definition
A theory about the term being defined.
Persuasive definitions
Used to influence the attitudes and emotions of an audience.
Genus
A term that is more general, broad, or abstract than the original term and includes it.
Species
A term that is more specific, narrow, or concrete than the original term.
(A type, kind, or example of a term.)
Genus and species hierarchy
Terms can be placed here clearly showing the relationships between them.
Mutually exclusive
They do not overlap.
(Species are mutually exclusive.)
Exhaustive
No other types exist. There is an end to the genus and species hierarchy.
