Lesson 1-2 Flashcards
What is Rutherford’s atom model?
electrons orbit around a dense positive nucleus
Classical mechanics vs quantum mechanics in motion of electrons.
Classical: doesn’t explain experemental observation
Quantum: treats the electron as a wave and particle and explains experemental observation
What is the photo electric effect?
When a metal surface is hit with a light an electron is emitted.
What is spectroscopy and what is it used for?
they observer how light and matter interact.
it’s used to investigate the internal structure of atoms + molecules.
what is light? and what is it made of?
electromagnetic radiation. made of oscillating electric and magnetic field.
color of light is determined by?
frequency or the wave length.
what is quanta?
packets of energy that are present during energy exchange between matter + radiation.
when is the energy of electrons constant?
when the atom is in a stationary state.
particle theory was proposed by who and why?
plank and Einstein. to explain interreference and diffraction.
in the photoelectric effect, when is an electron ejected? and what affects its kinetic energy?
electron is ejected when it’s above a threshold. the kinetic energy of the electron is affected by the frequency of incident radiation and not affected by the intensity of radiation.
what is the theory of relativity and photons?
The theory of relativity states that photons which are the particles being ejected have a mass.
what is Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle?
we can’t be certain about to measurements because of how small they are. we can know the position accurately but we can not know the momentum.
what is the Schrodinger wave equation used for?
1- describe the behavior of an electron in an atomic orbital
2- find the energy level associated with the particle wave function.
3- quantization of energy levels that are found naturally.
