The means by which co-culture members maintain their cultural identity while striving to establish relationships with members of the dominant culture – they may take on values and beliefs, practices of the hostcultureand accommodate them in the public sphere, while maintaining the parentculturein the private sphere
ACCOMMODATION
The means by which co-culture members in an attempt to fit in (or join) with members of the dominant culture give up their own ways to assume the modes of behavior of the dominant culture
ASSIMILATION
The means by which co-culture member use to resist interacting with members of the dominant culture
SEPARATION
Refers to adapting to a new culture while still maintaining aspects of one’s own cultural identity.
- Involves adjusting to fit in
ACCOMMODATION
Means fully adopting the norms and practices of the dominant culture, often at the expense of one’s original culture
- Essentially becoming part of the ‘majority culture’ by giving up one’s own distinct traits
