lesson 1 Flashcards
sample
group of individuals taking part in the research study
sampling
process of finding and recruiting individuals for the study
credibility
the degree to which the results of the study can be trusted to reflect reality
generalizability
to what extent the results of the study can be applied beyond the sample and setting used in the study
IV
iv is the cause. the one being changed or manipulated by the researcher
DV
dv is the effect. the one that changes due to the iv being manipulated
construct + example
theoretically defined variable. can not be directly observed.
ex: aggression, love, anxiety
what does it mean to operationalize a construct?
to express it it terms of observable behavior.
how might one operationalize anxiety?
one might look at a persons level of cortisol in their bloodstream, weight loss, or self report score on an anxiety questionnaire
confounding variables
variables that can distort the relationship between the iv and dv
how does one handle confounding variables?
elimination or by keeping them constant
target population
group of people to whom the results of the study are expected to be generalized
what does qualitative research focus on?
it focuses on things that can not be quantified, such as human experiences, meanings, and interpretations.
focuses on studying a phenomenon or behavior in a more in depth way
in what research study is the researcher involved in?
in qualitative research
when does a sample represent a target population?
when it reflects all its essential characteristics
