credibility in qualitative research Flashcards
triangulation
refers to a combination
of different approaches to collecting and
interpreting data
types of triangulation

theory
establishing a rapport (and hows its done)
researchers should ensure that participants in research experiments are being honest
by reminding participants of voluntary participation and the right to withdraw
remind participants that there are no right or wrong answers
iterative questioning
in sensitive studies, there is a risk that participants will lie or try to make an impression on the researcher.
Spotting ambiguous answers and returning to the topic later while at the same time rephrasing the question might help researchers
reflexivity
this is when the researcher reflects their own biases (personal beliefs or history) that might’ve influenced the experiment. researchers should identify the findings that might have been affected by these biases and how.
credibility checks
refers to checking the accuracy of the data by asking the participants themselves to reread the notes/transcripts to ensure that everything is accurate
thick descriptions
refers to the researchers obligation to explain the context in which the observed behavior is seen to make is understandable to an outsider
