Lesson 1 Flashcards
What does DNA do?
It has instructions for your bodily functions.
What is the full form of DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
What are the four nucleotides in DNA?
Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine
What are the 3 main components of DNA?
Deoxyribose sugar, phosphate group, nucleotides
What is the usage of histone proteins?
To compact DNA into spools of chromatin
What is the cell cycle?
The cell cycle is a series of functions performed by the cell before cell division
What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle?
Interphase
Mitosis
Cytokinesis
What are the 3 stages of INTERPHASE
Interphase G1 (gap one)
Interphase S (Synthesis)
Interphase G2 (Gap 2
What happens in Interphase G1 (gap one)?
- The cell increases in size
- Cell ensures it is prepared for DNA synthesis
What happens in Interphase S (Synthesis)
The DNA replicates
What happens in Interphase G2 (Gap 2)
Cell grows some more
It prepares for mitosis
What are the 5 steps in mitosis?
Prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
What happens in prophase?
What happens in interphase?
- Chromatin condenses into chromosomes
- Centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell
What are centromeres?
The part of the chromosome to which the spindle fibres attach to.
