What is Culture
- A code of attitudes, norms, values, the way of thinking.
- Determines the way we see ourselves, how we see the world.
- Is not right or wrong, inherited, about individual behavior.
- Shared beliefs and values, norms and rules.
What are the stages of the DMIS model

What is cultural appropriation
Taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.
You ‘appropriate’ the item and alter its meaning for your own purpose
What is cultural acculturation
Adopting new behaviors and beliefs of the new culture without rejecting your own.
What is cultural assimilation
The complete adoption of the dominant culture.
Could lead to complete loss of your of cultural identity.
What are the four acculturation strategies
Assimilation, Seperation, Integration, Marginalization
What is seperation (in the acculturation strategies)
When individuals reject the dominant or host culture in favor of preserving their culture of origin
What is integration (in the acculturation strategies)
When individuals are able to adopt the cultural norms of the dominant/host culture while maintaining their culture of origin.
What is marginalization (in the acculturation strategies)
When individuals reject both their culture of origin and the dominant host culture.
What is the denial stage (DMIS model)
Unaware of cultural differences, avoidance of interaction
“We are all the same”
What is the defence stage (DMIS model)
Threatened by cultural differences, critical of other cultures
“Refuse to shake hands”
What is the minimization stage (DMIS model)
Aware of different cultures, focus on similarities
“It’s a small world after all”
