Lesson 1 Flashcards
Name and describe five types of production tasks that Pro Tools can be used
Audio Processing: Pro Tools works with audio that is electronically stored in digital format (collection of discrete samples). Audio can be edited in Pro Tools.
Notation and scores: Pro Tools allow composers and musicians to view MIDI notes with standard music notation, which can be edited with the Score Editor Window.
MIDI Production: The software’s built-in sequencing technology enables users to record and edit MIDI notes in the MIDI Editor Window.
Mixing and Automation: Pro Tools offers a software-based mixing environment that provides control over signal processing, effects processing, panning and more. The mixing operations in Pro Tools can be automated and stored with users’ sessions, enabling users to recall and edit the mixes over time.
Audio for Video Post-Production: Users can import Quicktime movies or Avid video files to Pro Tools and use the Video Window for a visual reference as users record or edit the audio.
What is the frequency range of human hearing
20Hz-20kHz
What does the frequency of a sound wave affect in terms of how we perceive the sound?
It’s Pitches: Higher frequencies produce higher pitches, while Lower frequencies produce lower pitches.
How is frequency measured?
Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz/kHz).
What does the amplitude of the sound wave affect?
The loudness.
How is amplitude measured?
Decibels (dBs).
How does the sample rate of a system relate to the frequency of audio it can capture?
For a frequency to be accurately represented, each cycle of the sound must be sampled a minimum of two times.
What is the name of the law that specifies the relationship between sample rate and audio frequency?
Nyquist or Sampling theorem.
How does the bit depth of a system relate to the dynamic range of audio it can capture?
The higher the bit depth, the bigger the dynamic range.
How can you estimate the dynamic range of a system?
Bit depth x 6 = dynamic range.
What are some common digital connections available on Pro Tools audio interfaces?
What type of connector jack does each use?
S/PDIF - Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format (RCA jack)
AES/EBU - AUdio Engineering Society/European Broadcast Union (XLR jack)
