Lesson 1 Flashcards
What are the 5 vital signs?
Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate, Blood Pressure, Body Temperature, and Oxygen Saturation
Vital Signs
check important organs and how they are functioning
Heart Rate
- rate that blood is being pumped throughout the body
- aka heart beats per minute
Respiratory Rate
- rate of someone’s breathing
- number of breaths per minute
Blood Pressure
- pressure of circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels
Body Temperature
- measures body’s ability to make and remove heat
Oxygen Saturation
- how much of your blood is oxygenated
- oxygen-saturated hemoglobin/ total hemoglobin
Adult Normal Heart Rate
60-100 bpm
Tachycardic (Adult)
more than 100 bpm
Bradycardic (Adult)
less than 60 bpm
Infant Normal Heart Rate
120 - 160 bpm
Tachycardic (Infant)
more than 160 bpm
Bradycardic (Infant)
less than 120 bpm
Adult Normal Respiratory Rate
12-20 breaths per minute
Tachypneic (Adult)
more than 20 breaths per minute
Bradypnea (Adult)
less than 12 breaths per minute
Infant Normal Respiratory Rate
30-50 breaths per minute
Tachypneic (Infant)
more than 50 breaths per minute
Bradypnea (Infant)
less than 30 breaths per minute
Adult Normal Blood Pressure
- 90/60 - 140/90 (systolic/diastolic)
- Average is 120/80
High Blood Pressure (Adult)
- more than 140/90
- aka Hypertensive
Low Blood Pressure (Adult)
- less than 90/60
- aka Hypotensive
- many athletes and young/healthy people can be below 120/80 and be ok
Normal Blood Pressure (Infant)`
- 50 -120 (only look at systolic)
High Blood Pressure (Infant)
- more than 120
- Hypertensive
Low Blood Pressure (Infant)
- less than 50
- Hypotensive
Normal Body Temperature (Babies/ Adults)
- 98.6 F - 100. 4 F
- aka afebrile
High Body Temperature
- higher than 98.6 F
- febrile/fever
Low Body Temperature
- less than 98.6 F
- hypothermic
Normal Oxygen Saturation
- 95 -100%
Low Oxygen Saturation (Hypoxic)
- less than 95%
Fever
Temperature higher than 100.4 degrees fahrenheit
Vital signs are:
A series of measures that give an overview of a patient’s overall health
Heart rate is defined as:
The rate that your heart is pumping blood
Blood pressure is defined as:
The pressure at which blood is being pumped throughout your body
Which of the following is NOT a vital sign: Heart rate Blood pressure Respiratory Rate Oxygen saturation Body weight

Someone who is breathing really fast and short of breath is MOST likely: Tachycardic Tachypneic Bradycardic Bradypneic
Tachypneic
Someone who has smoked for many years and is short of breath is MOST likely: Hypertensive Hypoxic Hyperoxic Hypotensive

Oxygen saturation is defined as:
The saturation of oxygen in your blood
True or False: Vital signs are usually measured in rate of how many times a second is it happening
False
