Lesions of the Visual Pathway Flashcards
What is anopsia?
Loss of vision
Do lesions along any part of the visual pathway provide the same visual deficits?
No, each area damaged will provide a different clinical outcome
What is hemianopsia?
Loss of half of visual field
What is quadranopsia?
Loss of a quarter of the visual field
What does homonymous mean?
Loss of the same half of visual field for both eyes
What happens when a lesion occurs in the right optic nerve ?
Blindness of the right eye
What happens when a lesion occurs in the optic chiasm ?
Bitemporal hemianopsia
What is a possible cause of an optic chiasma lesion?
pituitary tumor (interrupts fibers from nasal halves of both retinae)
What happens when a lesion occurs as a compression of right lateral margin of the optic chiasma?
Nasal hemianopsia of the right eye
What is a possible cause of a compression of the right lateral margin of optic chiasma?
Aneurysm of right internal carotid artery
What happens when a lesion occurs in the right optic tract?
Left homonymous hemianopsia
What happens when a lesion occurs in the right Meyer’s Loop ?
Upper left quadrantanopsia of both eyes
What is possible cause of lesions in the right Meyer’s Loop?
Temporal lobe tumors
