Length and Time Flashcards
What is a rule used for?
A rule is used to measure length.
What are the units of length?
Km-Kilometer 1km=1000m
M-Meter 1m=100cm
Cm-Centimeter 1cm=10mm
Mm-Millimeter 1m=1000mm
What are the units of volume?
L-Liter
ML-Milliliter 1L=1000mL
Cm3-Cubic centimeter 1x1x1
Dm3-Cubic decimeter
M3-Cubic meter
What is a micrometer screw gauge used for?
A micrometer is used to measure small measurements=less than a millimeter
What are all the parts on a micrometer called?
Anvil, Spindle, Main scale, Thimble scale, Thimble, Ratchet
How to measure an interval of time?
Take the time at the beginning and at the end of a time lapse then find the difference between the two.
What are the parts of a pendulum?
Rigid support
string
bob
How to calculate the time it takes for 1 complete pendulum swing.
Measure the time it takes for multiple swings(oscillations) and calculate the average to find how long one oscillation is.
Hooke’s law formula
Force=spring constant x extension
F=kx
F=kx units
Force>Newtons
Spring constant>N/m
Extension>m
What do you need for Hooke’s law?
Clamp, Spring, Weight, Meter rule
What is k? (Spring constant)
Measure of stiffness of the spring
On Hooke’s law to measure extension you….
Measure first length from current length and find the difference
Practical for Hooke’s law
> You will need: Clamp, spring, weight, meter rule, stand
Measure spring with no load
Add one newton to spring and measure the length
Add another Newton to spring and measure new length
Repeat prosses
You’ll reach limit of proportionality where the spring won’t return to it’s original shape
