What is the purpose of the Consumer Law? (2)
- To look after customers and make sure we’re treated fairly
- To make sure products are sold fairly and of good quality
What laws does the Consumer Law cover?
- The law concerning products themselves
- The law concerning the way products are advertised
What does the Consumers Rights Act say?
- Products itself have to be of good quality
- Products must be fit for purpose (must be able to do what it’s intended to do)
What does the law state if a product is not of suitable quality?
The customer has a right of either replacement, repair or a refund (if the first two aren’t possible)
What are some of the legal constraints concerning the way a business promotes their product and what do these laws mean?
- Trade Descriptions Act
- Unfair Trading Regulations
- Advertising Standards Authority
- Ofcom (UK’s communications regulator)

What is an example of a business promoting their products and the consequences if they’re false?
Mcdonalds may promote their burger to be 100% beef and sourced from British or Irish Farms -if this were false it would be illegal; the Advertising Authority Standards could get involved to make them change their advertising or penalise them
