Legislation
A set of rules that governs the way a society operates. It is another term for laws. Prevents employees and consumers from being treated unfairly.
National living wage
An hourly rate of pay which is set by the government. All employees above 25 must at least recieve this rate of pay.
Equality act 2010
Prevents discrimination against employees on the grounds of race, gender, sexual orientation or age.
Discrimination
Treating one person differently to others with no good reason to do so.
Employees’ rights
Maternity pay, paid holidays, trade union, paid as stated in a contract of employment, suitable training, safe working environment, time off for certain reason.
Part time employees
Works for a proportion of the working week, for example, three days out of five.
Trade unions
A group of workers who act together to improve their pay and work conditions.
Contract of employment
A legal document stating the hours, rates of pay, duties and other conditions under which a person is employed.
Motivation
The range of factors which influence the way a person behaves at work. Can be improved by how well a business treats it’s employees.
Working hours
Are subject to legal limits. For employees above 18, these are limited to 48 hours a week but they can work longer if they wish
Effects of employees rights laws on a business
Can lead to additional costs. Paying maternity leave means a business is still paying an employee without the productivity. Allowing paid holidays and maternity leave can motivate employees to work harder.
Health and safety law
Prevents a business from putting employees in danger.
Health and safety at work act 1974
States that employers must “ensure that they safeguard all their employees’ health, safety and wellfare at work”.
Health and safety at work act covers…
Installation and maintenance of safety equipment and clothing, maintenance of workplace temperatures, sufficient breaks during the day, protection against dangerous substances, fitting guards on dangerous machinery, writing and displaying a safety policy.
HSE
Health and Safety Executive. Oversees operation of health and safety act and carries out inspections of business premises.
