How is L.Pnemophila transmitted?
It spreads through aerosolized particles of water.
L.pneumophila binds and enters respiratory epithelial cells and inhibits autophagosome-lysosome fusion.
What diseases and symptoms are associated with L.Pneumophila?
Pontiac fever: Fever, chills, headache and muscle ache
Legionnaires disease: Fever, chills, dry cough, headache, multi-organ disease involving GIT, and CNS, Liver and kidneys.
Inflammation and microabscesses in the lung.
How is L.Pneumophila diagnosed in the lab?
For serogroup 1: a urinary antigen test is done
Sputum culture can be done as well
What is the treatment for L.Pneumophila infection?
Levofloxacin
Azithromycin
