Adultery
Consensual sexual intercourse by a married person with someone other than his or her spouse or by an unmarried person with a married person.
Fornication
Sexual intercourse between two unmarried people.
Bigamy
The state of a man who has two wives, or a woman who has two husbands.
Polygamy
The state of having several wives or husbands.
Impediment
Disability or hindrance to making a contract.
Incest
Sexual intercourse between people who are related by consanguinity or affinity in such a way that they cannot legally marry.
Consanguinity
Related by blood.
Affinity
The relationship that one spouse has to the blood relatives of the other spouse.
Sodomy
Abominable and detestable crime against nature (nondescript); interpreted as oral intercourse, anal penetration and bestiality.
Bestiality
Sexual intercourse of a man or woman with an animal.
Due process clause
A clause in the U.S. Constitution’s Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment requiring that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without fairness and justice.
Miscegenation
Marriage between people of different races.
Equal protection clause
A clause in the U.S. Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment requiring similarly situated persons to receive similar treatment under law.
Abortion
The act of preventing a live birth by terminating a pregnancy.
Pro-life
Favoring legislation that prohibits or greatly restricts abortion; such as in rape, incest, or the health of the mother only.
Pro-choice
Favoring legislation that allows abortion.
Pornography
Refers to material or conduct showing or describing some kind of sexual activity and which is designed to cause sexual arousal; as distinguished from obscenity, this deserves regulation.
Obscenity
Offensive or legally prohibitable material or conduct that shows or describes some kind of sexual activity and is designed to sexually arouse; subset of pornography that is patently offensive and is subject to criminalization.
Prurient interest
A shameful or morbid interest in sex.
Ordinance
A law passed by a local or municipal legislative body, such as a city council.
Drugs
Chemical substances that have an effect on the body or mind.
Federal Controlled Substances Act
Passed in 1970, places strict controls on drugs that are listed in 5 different schedules based on medical utility, potential for abuse, and potential for dependence.
Controlled substances
A drug that is included in any of the five schedules established by the Federal Controlled Substances Act.
The Anti-drug Abuse Act of 1988
Allows for minor punishment without giving an offender a criminal record if in possession of a small amount.
Drug trafficking
The unauthorized manufacture or distribution of any controlled substances or the possession of such a substance with the intention of manufacturing or distributing it illegally.
