Trial by Ordeal: Combat
for upper class, accused fought the accuser, guilty died
Why did people swear an oath and to who,
Feudalism required people to swear an oath of loyalty and obedience to their lord, as they believed this gave them a free entry to heaven
Trial by Ordeal: Water
accused was bound and tossed into a river, innocent drowned, guilty floated and were then executed
Trial by Ordeal: Fire
Accused put an arm in fire, if the burn did not show any sign of healing within 3 days, the accused was guilty
4 Levels of the Court System
Village Court: Minor crimes, eg nagging wife
Manor Court: Doing things without lords permission eg a serf giving his son an education
Church Court: Crimes against church or teachings of the church, eg heresy
Kings court: Major offences, eg treason (betraying ones country/king by attempting murder of monarch)
Types of Crime and Punishment
Minor Crimes: Fine
Swearing: Shame eg stocks
Stealing: Mutilation, cutting of body parts eg hands, tongue
Treason: Death
