left realism Flashcards
favour?
policies that promote equality-reformist sociologists
3 explanations and ao3
relative deprivation-right realists, poverty not the cause of crime, inadequate socialisation is
subcultures-support AO3, similar idea to Mertons views of cultural goals and blocked opportunities , or cloward and ohlen link
marginalisation- accepts authorities definition of crime as being crimes of the poor, marxists say fails to explain corporate crime
solutions and AO3
reducing inequality- right realists, providing support is rewarding criminal behaviour
democratic policing-right realism - zero tolerance policing
subcultures AO1
not all subcultures lead to crime, eg some turn to religion for comfort, but as society’s materialistic goals are blocked, criminal subculture turn to crime
subcultures AO3
link to cloward and ohlen (support AO3)
relative deprivation AO1
crime has roots in relative deprivation, where people feel deprived in comparison to others
they see/feel other have more, get jealous and turn to crimes like stealing as means to achieve these consumer goods and status that they feel entitled to
the poor have access to media’s materialistic messages (consumerism) , but lack opportunities to teach them, feeling sense of deprivation
relative deprivation AO3
right realists- poverty is not the cause of crime, inadequate socialisation is
marginalisation AO1
unemployed, WC youth are marginalised, no organisation to represent them, just sense of powerlessness and frustration and express these feelings through violent means eg riots, violent crimes etc
lea and young- late modern society wc crime is worse because of greater job insecurity, high unemployment and decrease in welfare state
combined with destabilisation of family, worsens wc crime
high crime society, low tolerance for crime
marginalisation stretch
late modernity, exclusion and crime
we now live in unstable societies, used to be a golden age with good jobs and welfare systems, low divorce so less SPF and less crime
today- live in insecure communities, loss of unskilled jobs, low pay, cuts to welfare state, growing inequality between rich and poor, growing cultural inclusion, mc react badly
marginalisation AO3
accepts authorities definition of crime as being street crimes to the poor, marxists argue that they don’t explain corporate crime
reducing inequality AO1
remove underlying cause of crime- social inequality
structural changes tackle discrimination
new labour adopted LR approach- tough on crime, tough on causes of crime,
eg new deal aimed to get those on benefits into work with gov spending more on welfare state supports and quality of education
poorest in society most marginalised, most relative deprivation, more likely to join subcultures, increasing opportunity lowers likelihood of turning to crime as no longer blocked from opportunities
reducing inequality AO3
right realists-providing this support is rewarding crime , making them continue to commit, does not deter crime like it says it will, possible invemtive
democratic policing AO1
police rely on public for info, if flow of info dries up, must then rely on military policing, eg swamping an area
to win support, must become more accountable, involve communities in deciding police priorities and policies/elections
eg PCSO
AO3
right realism- zero tolerance policing
