Lecutre 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Molecules can have asymmetrical charge distribution due to
A
- lone pairs
- unequal sharing of bonding electrons
2
Q
What is a dipole moment
A
- measure of the polarity of a bond
- product of partial charges and the distance between these chargers
- u = q x; x = distance, q = magnitude of partial charge difference
3
Q
What are isomers? Two types?
A
- non-identical compounds having the same molecular formula
- constitutional isomers, and stereoisomers (split into cis/trans isomers and isomers that contain asymmetric centres)
4
Q
What are constitutional isomers?
A
Isomers that have the same molecular formula but linked different e.g. butane and isobutant
5
Q
What are stereoisomers?
A
Same molecular formula and linkage but 3D orientation differs
6
Q
What is achiral
A
Objects that have a plane of symmetry
- can be superimposed on its mirror image
7
Q
What is chiral
A
- does not have plane of symmetry
- cannot be super imposed on its mirror image
8
Q
molecules that are mirror images are called?
A
Enantiomers
