lectures three--crisis and disaster Flashcards
crisis
caused by a stressful event and threat, disequilibrium is common
types of crises: maturational
when you reach a new developmental stage and the old coping skills you had are not effective, so tension and anxiety result
types of crises: situational
extraordinary events, external events, these are usually unanticipated (job loss or change, death, change in marital status, illness (mental/physical)
types of crises: adventitious
weather (hurricane, tsunami, wildfire)
pandemic (COVID)
types of crises: human
violence (robberies, mass shootings, etc)
phases of crisis: 01: stressor/problem
where a serious stressor or problem results in increased anxiety, which stimulates normal defense methods and coping mechanisms to in an effort to decrease anxiety.
phases of crisis: 02:
defense mechanisms fail while the threat persists, and the anxiety increases, producing feelings of extreme discomfort, while the functioning becomes disorganized, and trial and error attempts at problem solving begin
phases of crisis: 03:
the trial and error attempts are failing, making the anxiety escalate to a severe/panic level, automatic relief behaviors are mobilized (relief and flight), and some form of resolution may be devised (ie. compromising needs or redefining situation)
phases of crisis: 04
the problem remains UNSOLVES and coping skills are continually ineffective. anxiety overwhelms the person. this can lead to serious personality disorganization (where the individual is out of adjustment with society), depression, confusion, violence against others, and suicidal behavior.
assessment of someone who is going through or has gone through a crisis
general assessment, perception of precipitating event, situational supports, coping skills
primary, secondary and tertiary prevention
primary: before an event (vaccination, preparing homes)
secondary: during (food and water sent to places hit by hurricanes)
tertiary: after (critical incident stress debriefing)
treatment modalities
ERs, crisis call lines, warm lines, crisis intervention teams, stabilization facilities
psych advance directives
same as medical, but for psych (who do you want to treat you, what facilities you want to go to, etc.)
disaster response–FEMA
- mitigate
- prepare
- respond
- rehab
