Lectures 5-6 Processes Flashcards
Cold rolling results in
elongated grains
Flat rolling is used to
flatten a slab or sheet
Draft in rolling is
amount of thickness reduced
Reduction in rolling is
draft expressed as a fraction of the starting stock thickness
Shape rolling results in
a non-flat cross sectional area work
Thread rolling is used to
create a thread on a work
Pro of rolled threads
the grain of the metal will not be broken as it presses them
Stretch formingis carried out by a sheet of metal
being clamped on either side and the die presses into the work from below
Peening is carried out by
shooting lots of high speed metal balls on the surface
Why is peening important?
As it allows both of the surfaces of a sheet to be in compression
Conventional spinning is carried out by
pushing a spinning piece of metal onto the die
Superplastic forming uses metals that are able to
stretch by many times of its original length
Superplastic forming is carried out by
pressurising a sheet metal from above that is within the dies using a heated gas
Bulging uses
rubber to create the mould
Bulging allows you to create
bended and curved sheets
